"The Sputnik Story" is a single released by Bill Thomas under Cullman Record label around 1957. This song personifies the Russian Satellite Sputnik. While it does not deal with children, it deals generally with space exploration. Essentially Thomas, portrays human space exploration as futile, thus implicitly discouraging child space exploration.
"The Sputnik Story portrays space exploration as a futile effort and should not be attempted through the personification of Sputnik. The lyric "old Sputnik they call me I'm as crazy as a loon" gives an impression individuals who would want to explore space themselves would have to be crazy. Also, the lyric "I'll never reach the moon," instills on its listener humans or any form of technology will never reach the moon at any efforts. This suggests that space exploration is something that cannot be accomplished. Finally, Sputnik asks his listeners why anybody would want to go to the moon. This question suggests there is really nothing to be found on the moon and to explore it would be pointless.
Since space exploration is portrayed as unsuccessful and futile, "The Sputnik Story" provides suggests humans should give up manned space exploration. In this light, it would imply a negative reaction towards sending children to explore space .
